Hiya, first thing I notice is that the max RAM possible on that machine is 2GB. Win7 will run, but 3GB would have been better. Can you get all the Drivers for it to run 7? Do you/he have a 7 OS disk and legal license?
What does he use the machine for ?

Hmm the machine only has 1gb ram Think it maybe best to reinstall xp.
The.machine is only used for browsing email etc nothing serious, not sure if I can get drivers. She has no driver cd for it so not sure if able to get drivers from Tosh site for xp

I did a quick look on Tosh's UK, FR, and US sites. No go there. Have not tried the 3rd world sites. But you may be able to get them from the individual component sites.

Toshiba Satellite Pro A100-03R - Celeron M 440 1.86 GHz - 15.4 Inch TFT Not a bad machine for its time. Core duo but they came miserably low in RAM. Agree with LH, you need 3gb RAM really to run Win 7 and 32bit will not see much more anyway. I think you have 2 slots but I suspect those slots are taken up with 2 512mb sticks so you might need to source some memory and we might be able to help there. I'd say that a minimum of 2 x 1gb sticks should be reasonable. A good find for the drivers too, Toshiba do quite a good driver support even for their eldery machines. If you have the install disk, for what she needs it for then is fine, just ensure you have a good A/v, SAS and Mbam as there is no support for XP now. Another consideration is whether the disk has SP3. If not then our pals over at MajorGeeks have a stand alone install HERE. At least with Sp3 installed drivers and many programs should work from default. many programs should work ok with reasonable security. I would recommend only 3rd party browsers, NOT Internet Explorer as the default!! Hope that helps....a bit

Thanks Mike, I will see how it goes with a genuine xp disk
As LH suggested, Linux would be a good alternative.

I am not really a Linux person, but I have tried a few out, and the last one, Zorin, seemed pretty good to me (if you are a windows person).

I'd agree with LH. Can be downloaded from here: sourceforge.net/projects/zorin-os/Zorin is ideal for windows users because of it's very familiar interface. I've loaded this on many an old machine with excellent results, driver wise. Tis certainly an option to look into.

I must concur with my fellow luddites here however, if your friend only uses the computer for surfing and emails then I'd recommend Zorin OS 9 Lite. This is the absolute basics of an operating system No Office programs just basic simple programs such as a music player (x2), a cd/dvd burner and a few other items that you may never use. If however your friend likes to use Office software from time to time then I would suggest Linux Lite it comes with LibreOffice pre-installed and has a few more programs than zorinlite but is still very quick and easy to use. Incidentally, zorinOS9 Lite is LTS (Long Term Support) which is good if you want it kept up to date Edit * But, make sure you run the software updater after installing if you're not connected to the net during install. Just my ££'s worth.

I would test it first, so follow this, zorinos.com/installguide.htmlJust play around with the Live version for a bit. Don't proceed to Stage 5 yet.

Burn the download, .iso to dvd. Ensure any data is saved. Boot your machine, but tap the F2 key. This will enter the bios. Under boot options, select the optical drive as 1st boot (ensure the dvd is in the drive) now select F10 (save changes) press enter. Machine will now boot from disk. Install to entire disk which will format, wipe previous data/os), follow on screen instructions. Once the install is successful you have options to add software, open office or Libre etc.
Let us know what you might need and we'll give you the terminal commands (CMD) to install them
