Hi guys,
On my backup drive I have a folder with subfolders where I store all my videos. There is a lot of videos in there! Somewhere in the last months however I added a video to the folder that gives problems. I didn't link the two events (explorer crashing when I opened the videofolder and it's relation to one of the videos) together till much later (and a lot of videos later. But by now the problem is so bad all I have to do is open the folder en bam, explorer needs to be restarted. So I can't find the culprit and more over I can't watch a single video from that folder anymore as can't get to them. I tried accessing the folder with Freecommander, but it crashes too.
So how do I find the video that is the culprit??? There are thousands of videos in the folder (all distributed over subfolders). Help! This problem rather scares me.

Hi Sarah, is the drive permanently attached to the computer?

Yes, it's a secondary hard drive.

Don't know if I'm reading it right or what exactly you want to find (I'm assuming you have some idea of what to look for) but if explorer and Freecommander aren't working then you may have some luck with a portable app like XYplorer

I want to find the one video file that causes the havoc. But I can't find it as any type of explorer crashes as soon as I open up the folder. And I don't have a clue which one causes the problem to begin with!
Last time I tried some avi diagram popped up, as if I had double clicked on a file, but I hadn't.

Does it / they still crash in Safe mode?

Does sound a bit like the file system itself has been corrupted. But as GS says, try Safe Mode first.

Ah will try that first thing tomorrow! I agree with Lighthouse, RUN CHKDSK /F on the drive. Also, get a video program, like VLC or KMPLayer for instance. See if IT can open any video in that folder. Open a CMD prompt and see if you can CD to that folder and if a DIR works... If it doesn't, corruption probably and CHKDSK might clear it but you could lose some data if it does try to fix it. Assuming you CAN open the folder and do a DIR without a problem... first try Explorer again and see if it still fails. IF it does, look in the EVENT VIEWER, it might provide a clue to the file (probably not). Again, assuming you CAN open the folder, get FFMPEG ( www.videohelp.com/software/ffmpeg) and it will test the files for you. Simple batch/CMD file using the line "ffmpeg.exe -v error -i file.avi -f null - >error.log 2>&1" with file.avi replaced with the list of files in a DO loop. Not interested then assuming Explorer crashes but you can do a DIR on the folder it is SAFE to assume a thumbnail is trying to be opened on all files in that folder and this is causing the crash. I guess you could verify this is the problem by turning them off, see HERE for details. If that allows you to open the folder in Explorer, then we know at least one file is corrupt. FFMPEG should find it but the other was is to start the division of the folder in 1/2 steps. That is COPY 1/2 the files (using the CMD prompt assuming that allows you to CD into it) to another folder. Hopefully with thumbnails on only ONE folder would make Explorer fail. Could be both if a LOT of files are corrupted though. You'll just have to do it differently if it is, copy only 10 files at a time to a new folder tying to open it in Explorer and the 10 more until you add the problem one (keep track of those added). Hope this helps...

Thanks, Irv. Haven't had time to do a run in safemode today yet, about to do that now. Did clean the thumbnails and that shows the problem is with one of the newer files as things run smoothly till it get's to the bottom. Then I get this message: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: Explorer.EXE Application Version: 6.0.6002.18005 Application Timestamp: 49e01da5 Fault Module Name: MPCVideoDec.ax Fault Module Version: 1.3.1249.0 Fault Module Timestamp: 4a9599bd Exception Code: c0000005 Exception Offset: 001cda77 OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1043 Additional Information 1: fd00 Additional Information 2: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160 Additional Information 3: fd00 Additional Information 4: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160 Read our privacy statement: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=50163&clcid=0x0409Off to do safemode now, will try checkdisk after if safemode doesn't help :P

Ok, safemode doesn't help and I can't open files in the folder with VLC player. I cán open files on the same drive though, just not in that one folder. Copying the files to another folder is not an option - there is 201 GB of files in it. I'll be busy till the world ends! Will disable thumbnails now.

Disabling the thumbnails worked, but how to find the culprit with FFMPEG I don't understand ...

Ran CHKDSK /F. Doesn't come up with any problems. But after opening the folder the problem still exists.

Opened every individual file (with thumbnails off) that I've added in the past few months (all was still ok in 2015, so only had to check newer files). But they all open just fine and give no problems. So what's next?

Ok, started shifting subfolders to a new folder and now have found it is a very old folder from 2007 with mov files that causes the problems. It's only this folder with mov files. I have other folders with mp4, mpeg, wmv, avi ánd (newer) mov from a different camera and they all work fine. However these mov files are from one of my very first litters and the first videos I have of my own pups, so I want to keep them!!! What is the best format to change them into to keep the best quality?
