Btw I am wondering why they all of a sudden have started giving problems, as I haven't opened that folder in years and they open normally once I turn off thumbnails. Have had some MS updates at around the time the problem started popping up. Could that be the cause???

Ok, started shifting subfolders to a new folder and now have found it is a very old folder from 2007 with mov files that causes the problems. It's only this folder with mov files. I have other folders with mp4, mpeg, wmv, avi ánd (newer) mov from a different camera and they all work fine. However these mov files are from one of my very first litters and the first videos I have of my own pups, so I want to keep them!!! What is the best format to change them into to keep the best quality? More than likely you are either missing a CODEC or have an old one that is causing the problem. I would go to an MP3 or 4 converter myself. There are many of them (Google for them). Some even on-line free.

Haha, well I won't try anything that we don't know about what it is, particularly now that I know which files pose the problem. I think the best I can do is convert them to another format, so I still have the videos, but not the problems anymore and burn the originals to CD, so I get to keep them (just in case), but they can't disturb things. Only problem is I don't know what format I can best convert them to. Which gives the no or as little as possible quality loss? - avi - mpeg - mp4 - wmv something else?

I have FormatFactory (cleaned out version without the addware etc. ), so converting is no problem. I'm just not sure which format would be best.

Have had some MS updates at around the time the problem started popping up. Could that be the cause??? I think .MOV are usually 'Apple/QuickTime' files? Possible a file was overlaid? Turning off Thumbnails stops specific filetypes from being opened so they can be displayed. It is the opening of the files causing the problem. Root cause IS the file itself. Either corrupt or your PC has a problem opening the file and possible causes could be 'bad' or missing Codec's.

I have lots of mov files and they work great, so I don't think it has anything to do with a missing codec. These are very old mov files from my very first digital camera. I have another camera now that also makes mov files and I have no problem with those.
Most important thing is that explorer doesn't crash anymore now that I've stuffed the lot in an extra subfolder. Each time explorer crashes my smartcard reader stops working. That was rather annoying! I'll leave figuring out the how and why to another day. For now things are good :)
Thanks for the help!
