So after all the palaver of trying to get Vista updates to go through and toying with the idea of installing Manjaro over it, I finally had updates go through. Great I thought. As I am one of probably a handful of people who do actually like the OS. However...,
On another machine I was running at the time RoboLinux (wheezy) which was great I liked it a lot, but, as with many distros and OS's the earlier ones were no longer supported, and in the case of my version of Robo wasn't even upgradeable.
So I figured Manjaro will be the one as I still even now like the look and direction of the Dark Themed version, after perusing the Manjaro home page I just didn't think it would be best for this systems specs.
The answer a slightly lighter OS which had continuing support but wasn't an actual light version ( as they tend to have limitations ), I looked at Slackware but figured I may not get the kind of support I would like, I looked at PinguyOS but realised it may be shutting down
I checked out Mint Mate but it was a little too obvious for my liking as was Ubuntu which I've never had a thing for ( not that there's anything wrong with it ), eventually I settled on SparkyLinux.
It's a distro I've wondered about for a while now so I bit the bullet backed up my docs etc ( unfortunately I did forget to back up my Bookmarks, silly I know but relatively harmless for me ).
Initial install went a bit 'flaky' due to human error as opposed to distro error I should've been paying attention. Second time lucky.
Second install went fine, like clockwork, upon first boot the system asks to check for updates / upgrades, that's a good sign.
Updated no problems and decided to play around to get a feel for it as the DE I am using is Mate which seems to be running nicely on 2GBs RAM ( I'm not overly a fan of Xfce DE, personal preference of opinion only ).
Upon next cold start ( the following day ) I realised my Wi-Fi icon had vanished Noooo! I had no internet via wireless and the usual commands don't work in Sparky.
This usual command doesn't work in Sparky Damn! what do I do now?
Took me a while but eventually found out 'They' had removed the older / usual commands for network managers and replaced it with a different NM meaning the command is now :
This displays a NM UI inside the Terminal ( a bit like AlsaMixer ).
To cut a long and blind story short I managed to figure it out and have since got my Wi-Fi icon back permanently
I am so far quite happy with my choice and even happier that it is upgradeable and has plenty of support, I have just installed Gimp through the Synaptic Package Manager ( straight from the distribution center ).
I would recommend SparkyLinux to those of you looking for a new OS that isn't too confusing ( just takes a little time to understand what each application does and where to find it ).
