My wife's PC again...
It is a Dell XPS 8500. Dell never 'tested and approved' this PC version for W10. Could be a big part of my problems with it.
About 6 weeks ago the PC would lose completely the USB function. Major ones that use it are the Network Adapter, Mouse and Keyboard. Found only 2 ways to fix it. Either disconnect the Network Adapter and put it back in or re-boot. This would happen randomly. Discovered the Feb. V1709 update had broken for some USB drivers... see support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4074588/windows-10-update-kb4074588,
=========
After installing this update, some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard or mouse, may stop working. This may occur when the windows update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.
=========
OK, that was probably it. Started also to see BSOD's with clock watchdog timeout and whea uncorrectable errors after trying to fix the USB drivers. Supposedly fixed according to the reference problem by support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4090913/march5-2018kb4090913osbuild16299-251. So that was installed by force as it wasn't picked up by Windows Update yet.
Clock BSOD's stopped but the 0x0124 BSOD errors....
Hmm, could be h/w... ran diagnostics and stressed RAM, no problems.
So I opened the case on a 6 year old PC... wow, CPU heatsink was almost completely covered with dust. Air intakes and fans had a lot of dust too. Blew that all off, closed the case and so far, the BSOD's have stopped. Got some programs to monitor CPU heat and it appears that 217F is the top that one should have and the temps on the 4 cores of the Intel i7 are running from the high 90's to less than 140F for the Max.
So is the system working fine? NOT AT ALL... Mouse is 'unreliable', hops and skips... mouse is 1/2 of a Logitech wireless combo of keyboard and mouse (MK510). When we had the USB dropping on 2/23 I got the latest version of the mouse Logitech s/w and re-installed it which didn't stop the USB problems. Now that everything supposedly is fixed with the MS update I decided to take the mouse out and reinstalled using the same file. Well, Logitech updated it on 2/25!!! Hmm, so I installed it and it didn't help. Well, it might be I had to reboot her PC and didn't, so I took it out and let the MS drivers handle it. Seemed to work better so I left it. This morning wife booted PC and the mouse is perfect and no BSOD's (yet). May put back the Logitech drivers tomorrow and see.
I'm beginning to think this PC is toast. Some Dell drivers are not certified for W10 and not been updated since 2015 or so. MS updates tend to replace some Dell drivers and can/might cause problems. It isn't almost worth the trouble trying to find suitable drivers that work with that h/w and W10.
So for now, all seems good... W10 sure can mess things up with updates, can't they...
Don't forget, that Feb. update also had this problem:
=======
After installing this update, some devices may fail to boot with INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
This issue occurs when the windows update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.
=======
I wonder who tests these things, certainly not the Insider's or these problems would have been caught. I guess MS is up to its old tricks, putting untested code into releases just before they go out. Sure leads to confidence that the update will not cause problems.
