This is the 1st time I have tried to do this, and although I know the steps to go through, it just doesn't work for me. Moving it from C:\ to external USB thumbdrive J:\ Any help appreciated. (it should be the same process in XP, 7, and 8 as well.)

Hmm, normally this is easy. Open the System properties, Advanced Settings, Performance, Virtual Memory and for C: check NO PAGING and then select the drive you want it to be on and then the size and re-boot. The problem could be using a USB drive though. If the drive isn't detected when the PAGEFILE.SYS is to be written the default will then be used. Quite possibly the USB driver had not been loaded yet or fully initialized. I'd suspect the Event Viewer would have an error about this if it was able to run then as well. Hmm, HERE is an answer although old. Makes sense though, removing the USB drive when operating can have some weird consequences, and even if not swapping, there still is some small bits of data put on that file.

Irv, I think you may be right in that it is not detecting the USB drive. I will experiment some more with different partitions and drives.
Edit: The problem with XP and USB had slipped my mind, but I am using Vista, which has no such problem.
Thanks.

After trying a ton of things, I finally noticed on another site "You cannot move the page file to an external or removable drive." So problem solved, and a lot of time wasted:)
