A friend had to get a new laptop for work, but of course it comes with win8. I had put Macrium Reflect on her win7 machine, but for win8 there is no free version of Macrium. So I was hoping you gals and guys have run into a free alternative imaging software, that works as well

This is an old thread, but for those who might still be looking at it I would like to make an alternate suggestion.
If you don't want to use Macrium, use this command from an elevated command prompt:
Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:X: -include:C: -AllCritical -quiet
Where X is the device (external disk or large flash drive) to which you want to write the image.
For recovery, you need a recovery USB flash drive or DVD. To create one, you go to the Recovery Media Creator - type recovery on the start screen and "Create a Recovery Drive" will show up. Just follow the wizard.
The day you want to recover, you boot from your recovery media and you drill down this chain:
• Language setting • Troubleshoot • Advanced Options • System Image Recovery
Make sure the device on which you have stored the image(s) is attached at this point. Then the system will find the image(s) automatically.

whs, thanks once again for your input. Interesting subject about imaging and Win 8 (with bing!!). Many of the problems that come my way is, safemode!! In previous versions of Windows this was pretty straight forward.....jab the f8 key on boot, gets you into safe mode and then you have access to system restore. Bloody useful to either restore to an earlier mode or uninstall some crap app(s). Win 8 is just not machine friendly in that way. Each manufacturer will have its own mode of recovery matched to the machine. What a load of bollocks, it will only recover to default...reinstall and lose data and settings. We have seen so many ways to invoke SM in win 8 and to be quite honest they don't work, it is tied to the OS. This frankly is unacceptable. The main users, everyday users, are just effed off! Each machine will perhaps a 'onekey' recovery option but specific to the manufacturer / machine So if you have not backed up data the drive is wiped and becomes the day you bought it!! So WE make our own images. But the everyday user might not understand that? Kin rubbish OS is Win 8!!
