Since you can get to safe mode try running Malwarebytes in safe mode. See what it finds. Do you have any backups, system images?

Looks as though you have no data your trying to save. So this time try the factory restore again if you can. Don't do the updates, this time. See if it black screens again, and post back.
It maybe a hardware issue. To try and rule that out, try the factory restore again without updates, since black screen occurred after update reboot.

Pretty sure that this is a hardware issue. Could be the graphic driver for instance. I doubt whether this is a virus issue. Safe mode loads only the basic drivers. As there is no data to be saved then I would do a factory install, for the moment without internet connection. Once installed successfully and booted into windows normally, have a look in device manager. The restore SHOULD have loaded the presario drivers needed. Expand each section, looking for exclamation marks!! If there are none then drivers were installed. Reboot again and see if windows loads normally. Don't install ANY new software at this stage. If it does boot fine then connect to the internet and have fun either watching paint dry or grass growing!! There will be a plethora of updates to deal with for sure! The updates will be quite large so consider selecting them in batches, the machine will require rebooting each time. This ensures you don't get the 'FAILED' notice. The updates should also update most of the hardware drivers. When successfully done, check device manager again and see if there are any driver issues. If there select update driver, select>>>>> If not now you can install software as needed. I hope this info helps.

Thanks for reporting back, sorry for delay. Glad you are now up and running.
I am wondering about those PUPS causing this, but what the heck, you never know these days for sure. However, saying that, all these little Buggers could prevent a slow boot whilst loading their horrible little invasions!
I'd be happy to teamview with you should you so wish and give your system a second look, as it were. Please contact me

Can't remember now whether to watch grass dry or paint grow...... half a gig of updates! I imaged the system immediately!! Skype>>>>> as you can see has little impact in our life and it's not bereft of a few bob either lol!

Do you need help with it, or should she just be banished from any further computer use?
