Helpful information about back ups. Should have everything setup as I want it by tomorrow evening. Most likely will use Macrium as usual.

A few days into using new laptop, wireless at home, and W8.1.
Thanks to Mike, who recommended this laptop. While missing a few features, it works great for $250.
Thanks to irv, and whs. The tips and suggestions you made got me to where I am now with this machine.
Decided to try and get used to W8 without using Classic Shell. I found so far, that the tiles are useless, at least for me. At start up computer goes directly to desktop. Right clicking the windows icon lower left in taskbar gives me shutdown and restart options as well as some others. Would be nice to have an all programs listed there but it's not. Also programs and shortcuts don't all open in maximized window. This was a problem at least since XP days. Managed to get that sorted on other windows versions, so far not on here. Not done tinkering but, all going well so far.

If you Right Mouse Button on the program/shortcut and select PROPERTIES from the list it should open to the SHORTCUT tab. On it you'll find RUN: and you can set how it opens from there. NORMAL WINDOW I think is the default, but other choices are MINIMIZED and MAXIMIZED. Some apps I find think a Window is best, but I also have some set to NORMAL WINDOW that DO open FullScreen (Games for instance) and maybe NORMAL WINDOW means what the program author thinks the app should be run as?

I found so far, that the tiles are useless, at least for me. At start up computer goes directly to desktop. Some Tiles I've found to be a better choice than opening a browser and going to a specific site. Using the WINDOWS key to get to the tile screen and back is easy but if you have a tile open, it remains open unless you've used ALT-F4 to close it. Problem is I'll use the WINDOWS key to get to the START SCREEN and then select a tile. Now if I want to open others I have to use the WINDOWS KEY again and select that one, but I can have many running that way. Move the mouse to the upper left and you can then CLOSE open tiles. However I don't like doing many mouse clicks if I don't have too. Not found anyway to avoid this, so I don't use many tiles. Tiles do have their place, but closing them is problematic when you have many open as these do NOT close but sort of 'suspend' themselves and stay in RAM. No big deal on a 'fast' system with a lot of RAM (more than 4GB's) but on slower systems this can be a problem as those tiles are 'live' and can update themselves it seems. Best to close them when not in use. If you'd rather go direct to the START SCREEN you can undo the settings to go direct to the DESKTOP.

Thanks Irv, tried that. No luck with it yet. Just seems that MS. would have fixed that simple thing by now. There are third party apps that may help. Never had to resort to those before though.

Irv, there is no app causing a problem. I just want programs and shortcuts to open maximized. I think there are third party apps to do that, Auto-Sizer comes to mind but, have never tried it or any others.
