The HD in my Vista computer is beginning to fail. Have replaced it once before from the WD 250GB that came with it to Seagate Barracuda 500GB. This is mostly a back up and test machine. Wife uses it for music videos and some web browsing. Have never tried a SSD would it be a viable alternative? If it is what would I need? Feel free to ask questions, will answer soon as possible. Thanks.

For Vista, use an OCZ Vertex. As far as I know, that is the only one that supports TRIM in Vista.
Do you turn the computer off when not in use ?

Yes, computer is not usually left turned on. Shutdown nightly except possibly on weekends.
Would the drive you are suggesting be the only drive or should I use a spinner too?

I would recommend 1 (preferably 2) external spinners for the backups.

Joe, just out of interest you could run the seatools program: www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/See how the drive is really performing using that. Certainly an ssd will really make difference under Vista, but if you can bring back the Seagate then use it as a storage drive. Have a feeling you may have to reinstall Vista as the SSD is smaller than the Seagate, it depends whether you perhaps can shrink C: to which SSD you decide on.

Would it be sufficient ? Depends on what you store on your system drive (apart from the OS)

Not much stored on it. A few of Cherie's favorite vids. Could as you said just store them on an external. Will have a look and get back to you on that.
Plan on getting into the machine here this afternoon. Had it apart not long ago for a cleaning, that was before the noises started however.

Whilst any noise from the HDD is not good. Back up anything important. I have had those drives work for years after (and still do). Just don't save important data on them.

Sorry it took so long to reply. Power out here for about 5 hours. Then was unable to connect to site. Will try Mikes seatools suggestion and also will back up to external as LH suggested. Will do it tomorrow, this outage thing has taken up my planned time. Thanks for the replies.

Would try the Sea Tools repair first. If NO-GO, would replace the drive with a Spinner. An SSD WITHOUT Trim using Vista will not get you very far plus is too expensive for use with older OSes. Save the money for your new Haswell Build. Remember I said I would still help you with that Build.

Okay, thanks for the replies. Mike, I ran the Seagate tools diagnostic. HD failed the fix long test but, only because it could not find the disc serial number test code 6c9ac2a4. So no real problem. LH, Backed up what I needed to, which like I said earlier was not much. Drive is somewhat noisy but will put up with it for now. Might last longer than I think. Rick, Taking your advise not to spend money for a SSD. Still want to do that build when $ become available. So, used something from all of your suggestions. thanks again. Did notice cpu fan noise when running high so, may look for one of those. Or heat sink and fan combo. We'll see.

Yes, that and your build help. Wait till next year, no problem might have the money by then. Only thing is by next year will be waiting for the next technology advancement. Time is actually not on my side either. Not going to post Rolling Stones song, even though it came to mind. LOL
