Now I know I can use Process Monitor ( www.winhelponline.com/blog/find-application-making-sounds-in-background/) to find that out somewhat easily when the computer is in use. I've done it before and it was relatively easy. However in the last few days I've hit a different scenario. During SHUTDOWN I'd get a 'ding' or a 'single note' once the screen goes into Shutdown mode. Shutdown completes too without a problem. Not every time, but at least 50% of the time if not more. My suspicion is a program was updated and it has a 'new' setting for that or is somehow playing a .WAV file due to something it had happened during close? According to Task Manager I've got over 80 processes running. Also it seems I've got 7 apps running... Firefox I'm using, Task Manager of course, and 5 Metro apps I had used. This seems odd as I don't see them on the Task Bar? I did 'close' them with the RED X on the upper right, but I guess they stay in memory? Usually when I leave them 'open' and come back to the Desktop they DO appear in the Task Bar? I suspect ONE of these now is the culprit. Probably reason I don't hear it everytime is because I don't always use them? They are ESPN, Money, NBC News, Sports, and Yahoo! Finance. Suggestions? One think I am going to do is CLOSE them all in TM and hopefully when I shutdown I'll not hear the sound? EDIT: Re-booted, no sound? Maybe one of those, they are 'live tiles' were updating? Also just tried the RED X and it was still in TM, but if I used ALT-F4 it was NOT... I thought they were the same... ALT-F4 to be used now all the time I guess?

Last night on Shutdown I got the sound again... sort of a partial 'bong'? So this morning I decided shutdown immediately after boot and got it again? I then re-booted and looked at 'sounds' and play them all. None sounded like it? Hmm... I then shutdown, no sound? No Live Tiles were opened, although they could be updating, and I did boot direct to the desktop (on Win8.1).
Now suspect an Auto-Started program. I have 25 of them. Since a week ago I've had a few programs updated... one a Dell Support Center and Direct Connect. The other possibly was McAfee that had a new version installed. I don't recall either having sound options? Dell's Tech DID poke around in my registry. I might have had a h/w failure on my 19-in-1 card reader? After the Tech removed Registry entries for the card reader I had to re-authenticate Win 8.1 as MS saw the system as changed h/w I guess? No problem with that, and I'm thinking that was around the time I started to hear this?
I've not noticed any errors. Event Viewer just shows the normal Information and Warnings. All of these appear to be on Boot, not Shutdown too, so I'm not sure what is going on? I guess I'll have to live with it?
