Scientists create internet cables 50,000 times faster than superfast broadband The frustrations of slow internet downloads could become a thing of the past after British researchers discovered a way to send data at 50,000 times the average broadband speed. Scientists at University College London have developed new fibre-optic equipment that can send data at 1.125 terabits per second. The speed, a world record, is enough to transfer an entire TV series at high-definition quality in a fraction of a second, compared to the hours it would take many British households. I must be missing something. In the article it says "Almost a third of households have speeds of less than 10 megabits per second". Then below is a map showing speeds by area, and the lowest speed listed is 16.9 MBPS. I know I'm lucky to get 6 MBPS.

This was reported by the BBC today; York - the fibre frontier Its arrival was signalled by a fibre optic cable poked through a hole in the front room wall by a TalkTalk engineer just a few minutes ago. Now the needle on the speed test I'm running on my phone swings further and further to the right and gives me a spectacular reading - 319 Mbps download and an even more astounding upload speed of 243Mbps. MORE>>>>>I was recently contacted by Sky to trial free a similar setup. I said yes.....still waiting to hear back. At the moment I'm getting Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC, although OpenReach did run a fibre cable to door, it is not yet connected. Speed is variable 38 - 78mbps but the higher more often than not. My twisted pair is 50 mtrs from the cabinet. Upload is a consistent 6mbps. If you use www.speedtest.net/ you can d/l a csv file or use the snapshot when having a pop at them!! This is a snap of Virgin April 2013, the 'best' of an average.... Brian, the UK broadband con will never end. In some cases, I have called my clients service provider to complain about appalling d/l speeds and it has been uplifted albeit pro tem only to reduce over a few weeks. Don't know who you are with but it might be worth calling your ISP, find out what you are SUPPOSED to be getting for what you are paying for. 6mbps is pretty naff for your area I was with Virgin Media for 8 years, fibre to the door. I complain about throttling and my then speed went up to 80mbps. After a while this went all over the place and with indignation made a further complaint, they talked me into the SuperHub (I had to pay 30 quid for the blasted thing) that was to guarantee a 100mbps at 90% of the time....after 3 bloody new SHubs and again appalling service I voted 'just had enough' especially when the price rose by a fiver a month!! I'm happy to stay with Sky, I get what I pay for and is 25 quid cheaper.
