Update
Good news abound, after waiting 9.5 - 10 hrs yesterday I finally had some updates go through, 38 to be exact and a couple of optionals which I didn't need. It was then a further 2 - 3 hrs for the installation process to go through (for 38 updates!).
Why did MS never get the hang of Dynamic installs?

Why did MS never get the hang of Dynamic installs? They do in most cases. Problems are DLL's mostly. The code to do 'live' update to them hardly worked. So they use the PENDINGFILE operation from the registry. Means a re-boot is necessary. All done with "PendingFileRenameOperations".

Not me, I've not been back there other than some links I found 'rarely' when Googling. I knew about this as Windows had always done the 're-boot' thing. When OS/2 was developed it with MS fixes with the Fixtool was doing the same thing. MS has a file called 'INUSE.EXE' that supposedly replaced open files, I think in its Server products, but it didn't always work. The original developers of the OS/2 Fixtool designed it to be on a diskette and self-booting. Just as bad in terms of needing a few boots, one for the diskette and then again for the OS. As the OS/2 project started 'down', I wound up with it and had to learn the code. So many people had their hands on it, and there were so many 'IF's in it and comments using obscure project names and part numbers it was almost impossible to figure out. Most just left the code in it and put in new code to handle new features. I cleaned it out as best as possible and then decided to see if I could run it under the OS. OS/2 had better handling of open file than Windows. That is how I knew how MS did it as OS/2 did it better
