Ok here is an update.
I recloned the original C: drive to the WD dual drive. This was the backup (Macrium) on the original drive installed on the HP after installing the basic softwares etc.
Worked fine!!
So I believe the fault may have been the Veeam backups!! I should have had Macrium backups too but relied too heavily on Veaam. Lesson learned!!
The HP now has the original spinner in and I have left the 16gb Ram in. Pretty useless to take it out anyway. It is difficult to access, requiring the right hand MB to be uplifted. What a bloody daft design. It's bad enough just to access the HDD bay, needing to take the whole back off and lift out the keyboard.
Not very intuitive for the average user!!The HP now runs fine with no issues.
Anyway, the HP is now up for grabs if anyone is interested.
It is the HP Pavilion Notebook - 15-p158na Touchscreen, 1.5tb HDD + 16gb Ram.
As LH and I discussed; I have wiped the WD dual drive and will be wending its way to France shortly. For the amount of software I run the 128gb SSD was just too small and may have impacted on the problem raised above.
It was time to get another lappy, I get easily bored and rarely keep a machine for more than a year.
After a bit of research and a bit of fund finding I bought the Lenovo Ideapad 500 as shown below.
Yes Windows 10!! But I thought a clean winx is better than an upgrade!!
Initial setup was pretty smooth....Got rid of the usual OEM bundled rubbish and installed my usual program for everyday use, all installed pretty quickly. And worked....except Office. Although it appeared to install and the key was accepted an update quickly came alongand deregistered the legal key. WHAT!! Took 2 hours to activate it over the phone (via and India call centre, I had to call them back because I just could not hear the new 8 block codes!!)
So all seemed ok so I macrium'd a backup. No problem there.
I have decided to upgrade the ram to 16gb even though it came with 12gb. Only because I will replace the HDD to a 500gb SSD so while the back is off (same old problem with new machines) I might as well just do it!!
New ram is 2 x 8gb Corsair Vengeance arriving today or tomorrow, dunno. I onlywant to open this machine once.
So there will be an 8gb stick and a 4gb stick (DDR3 1600) up for grabs!!
Left machine on overnight as I normally do. This morning MS update decided that Piriform is untrusted and had the bloody cheek to uninstall Ccleaner and Speccy. It also decided that Classic Shell was untrusted and disabled it.
I had the original installers on stick so just reinstalled them. I find this offensive because, I, as the user, have no control on my machine.
Before I pull out any hair that might be left I will give it a couple of days of more testing; I have a copy of Win 8.1 pro and I might just install that, it the system will allow.
Any thoughts would greatly appreciated BTW.
Thoroughly miffed, Kingston upon ThamesPS perhaps I should have put the winx miff in a new topic?
