HP printer ink is very over priced and they want it to stay that way. My old HP Photosmart C4585 was very temperamental, continually having to reinstall the software (takes ages with all the bloatware bundled) forever losing wireless connectivity. Bloody useless in Win 8 and 10. HP never bothered to update drivers for this machine.I did use generic cartridges and they worked fine, a third of the cost. In the end I went for a Canon and it is excellent. Copy cartridges again cost 3rd of Canon. One odd thing is that the wireless 'auto switch on' does not work after the Anniversary Update but works fine in 7

One odd thing is that the wireless 'auto switch on' does not work after the Anniversary Update but works fine in 7 Mike, I think it is HP, period... 2 HP's here, a C310A and 7525. Both wireless. On the C310 a friend got a new printer and gave me his 3rd party 564 cartridges. Only put them into the C310. On power up it 'complains' that it had 3rd party cartridges on the LCD and computers. No problem though, just press OK and it works fine. Both of these printers will occasionally not work, on 3 of our PC's. The older XP we keep around for the kids they never have a problem. Either the print or scan will fail. Sometimes one function, other times both functions. Will fail on one PC, work on the other... Sometimes the HP Print and Scan Dr. will fix it, but usually it is a reinstall. Need to re-do the settings then too. Seems to be a common problem too. Cannon's it seems are much slower than HP's printing the first page a friend noticed (not sure which Cannon he has). Another have a Kodak and complains the ink cartridges are too small and even though they are cheaper, he buys them more often that the HP he had before. Here in the US you can buy a new HP for under $40 USD. However the first set of ink cartridges you go buy will cost more than the printer!!! Even the more expensive ones are almost like that. For instance just yesterday a friend bought an HP4660 for $100 USD. Had 2 cartridges, 1 black and 1 tri-color. Cartridges in the printer are 'starter' ones. Will run out in no time. A box of a black XL and normal tri-color costs $60... My 2 use 4 cartridges and one Photo one, but it costs me over $100 to get 2 black XL's and 1 each XL of the others. BTW, HP keeps track of what you use internally. Use a 3rd party and your warranty is voided, period. They will no do anything for you, even after the warranty runs out. We've switched cartridges between printers and it knows when we put a used cartridge in as well. Reason is HP then knows (doesn't really but assumes) if 'you' used a refilled one, and that too voids the warranty.

Those all appear to OfficeJet models. HP generally makes those for non-picture printing purposes. Most home users buy the older PhotoSmart series which was replaced with the Envy line now. Mine are both PhotoSmart's. I don't think they even can be updated, no setting for it. BTW when helping a friend chose an HP printer to replace the one that died, could not find ones that used the 564 cartridges which were true 3 color ones. All new ones seemed to use a single color cartridge. Good for HP, one color runs out and you buy a new cartridge...

Irv, you are right on the Canon, the first print sends the printer into 'getting ready' mode, however thereafter prints rapidly with a good quality print, colour and B&W. Also the scan to PC is the best ever to work. The HP failed on many occasions. We did have a local company that would, while you wait, refill HP (or other) cartridges thus getting round the chip problem, sadly they have now gone. Canon reports each cartridge in a small window and these can be bought separately, when necessary for a very decent price. But I tend to buy the 4 anyway. HP multi is a nightmare if one colour runs out the whole cartridge is useless. I tend NOT to register any printer because the serial will report back to the manufacturer if possible!! Printer warranties are worthless, not worth the paper they are printed on!!
One thing did notice on the HP when this happens on 3rd party cartridges is to just unplug and reinsert the power supply, in most cased this worked.

Are you able to do hardware updates on the printers onboard computer ? Only our HP7525 has a F/W update on 9/16/2016. Supposed 'reason': Fix and enhancements Enhancements to networking security Enable Protected Management Frame (PMF) router connection Fixes miscellaneous minor defects I think I'll pass, maybe the 'minor' defect is the cartridge deal. The Automated Update is set to ASK me anyway. If it went out and found that update it should have asked by now I'd think? I will watch for it. Maybe it was recently posted and the update checks every week (don't know when the last was?).

I was told "on the sly" by a HP trained Technician to ALWAYS PURCHASE HP OFFICE MODEL PRINTERS as their firmware can be updated and the printers can be fixed and or modified by using "secret" coding taught at HP development.
The Technician is an old friend of mind so is not trying to sell me anything but just giving me his best knowledge and advice.
Since I deal with the Veterans Administration and MUST use FAX, I always ask my friend to install the HP Drivers perfectly on all my NON-TEST machines as the machines MUST be capable and available 24/7.
As most of you know me for the past 8/9 years, I don't ever use or recommend any "cheap junk" OEM or Builder Hardware as in the end, one spends more in replacement cost and also in the cost to keep up with technology.

In 1976, I was flying as an Instructor Pilot in the military reserves, Was Engineer in charge of EPA cleanup of an Exide manufacturing Plant, Did Dirt Track Stock Car racing for fun and profit AND would have married Stevie Nicks no matter if she were drunk, high or sober.
She was beautiful to me and my life was boring. (LOL) (LOL)

CIA/VIP configurations should have faster acceleration times. Less total weight when operating. These beast always do at least 100 MPH on interstates where speed limit is 70. License plates are too blacked out to read. Everybody seems to have one because gas is cheap in US right now. All built Configure to Order (CTO). Six to Eight Weeks Delivery wait time.
