Hello. Brother Jaso (HP2000/Win8.0)
I'm trying to do some time critical av editing, and all of a sudden, MS creates a window telling me my hardware is broken! LOL And it's going to collect some information.
So, I immediately unpower (plug and cord), press the start button a few times to make sure I have a hard reboot, and power back up. No problems just as before.
I should have made a snipping tool screenshot to post here, but failed.
Has anyone else had this?
How do I tell this computer not to talk to MS and MS not to talk to this computer? (I think I've pretty much stopped the computer, might be wrong though)
It's a good thing I wasn't trying to make money with my av editing, as then, MS would be cross with me.
Is what I'm thinking is that MS can't connect to this machine the way they want to. So, they throw a wrench in to force compliance. Does that sound about right?
Is there a way to stop MS servers, from within the company itself, from seeking this machine? (Like an opt out policy for those who wish not to take MS support?)
What other options are there? I did mac for a while, it's OK. I've heard about Ubuntu and Linux. Just wish I could go to a store and buy an Amiga like the old days, and not have some sort of strings attached. They've really left themselves open to technicalities regarding the sale of computers as no salesman even mentions these things. (muchless know about 'em) Is there an older os (maybe xp?) that is good? (prior to their having started their new policy of attaching strings to their os?)
Thank you very much! Brother Jaso

Ummm... the obvious thing to do if you are working on something critical, is disconnect the computer from the InterWeb!

My most humble and sincerest apologies. (I didn't have.. the right hat on) Yes, you are correct sir! Thank you. Thank you. SOLVED I was minding my own business, and all of a sudden something happens, so I'm working with it, I'm thinking I'm going to knock all this out 1.. 2.. and here comes MS. LOL Also bumped into this.. forums.spybot.info/downloads.php?id=55Is this TGIG approved? Thank you very much! Brother Jaso

Once upon a time Spybot was good. Then it was bad. Heavy on resources, having conflicts, that sort of thing. I haven't used it for years so don't know now. What protection are you looking for?
edit, I notice that was a special Spybot app. I don't use W10, so can't test it.

Just the kind of protection that tells the phone to block incoming calls. (metaphorically speaking with regards to above). But, I had been doing some processor intensive av editing already and had been doing other tasks simultaneously. Could've been a legitimate hardware melt down. (didn't smell any smoke though) Yes, resources, I did not know that. Seeing it's working with telemetry, I thought maybe it was going to nip something in the bud and just hang out like WFC4 (Windows Firewall Control) does. Some programs I've obtained, like a desktop dock program, have a whole other hidden program just for phoning home. I can remove it with, I use Security Task Manager, and retain full functionality of said desktop dock program. (stopped using it, resources) It says it's backwards compatible with my os. I guess I could try it out and monitor it. But then it might cut into my time it takes to appropriately respond to posts time. lol When you say, "I don't use W10", does that mean you are on like W14beta or more like Unix or Linux? Thank you very much! Brother Jaso

Hello. Brother Jaso (HP2000/Win8.0) I'm trying to do some time critical av editing, and all of a sudden, MS creates a window telling me my hardware is broken! LOL And it's going to collect some information. So, I immediately unpower (plug and cord), press the start button a few times to make sure I have a hard reboot, and power back up. No problems just as before. I should have made a snipping tool screenshot to post here, but failed. Has anyone else had this? My wife hit something similar too... just don't recall the details? Twice in fact. Once I know she was playing a game, other time I think it was just surfing the web. I also think it was video related each time. She's got an AMD Radeon card. She just rebooted and all was fine. I tried discovering what actually happened and there was NO hint, no error log, no Event Viewer info, nothing? After the 2nd time (weeks apart) I searched and found that AMD had an UPDATE DRIVER. Installed that (she's on W10) and the AMD program that checks for updates. Keep her PC current with respect to drivers and it has not happened since. I really DO NOT think MS (or anyone else) is contacting your PC and checking. Whatever it was that actually reported the problem is probably already on your PC and running all the time. You might be interested in THIS INFORMATION. That tells you how to determine 'who' put the dialog box up. Matter of fact, since you were doing some AV editing you were possibly hitting a problem with the video driver which caused all this. I'd check to see if you have the latest driver and also run some diagnostics to make sure the card is OK, specifically while using it heavily and check for temps, GPU-Z is good for this. Wouldn't hurt to open the box and clean out the 'dust bunnies' especially around the fans, CPU, and video card.

I did not know that.
Thank you. Thank you.
GPU-Z, yes, I have this. Thank you. Didn't know that about Process Explorer. Good looking. Yes, dust bunnies. Will have to work with that. (Actually I dropped the machinge once. The fan ever since (intermittently) sounds like there is a little fragment of material getting tossed around in there. (like when the laptop is on and I'm carrying it to the outside workbench, I'll hear it. But when I set the laptop down, the particle(s) level out.
I've noticed your avatar before. (not sure where) Hang Loose Bruddah! LOL
I push the boundaries of computers seeking their limits over the course of 35 years now. It's easy to do. This seemed to have all the hallmark tell tale signs of over burdening the cpu. (It was a 10 hour edit, getting near the end of completion, and I'm online and doing other things, lol) (normally, I would set it to render in my sleep.)
I'm almost sure it said it was getting information for MS, but it all happened so fast, as soon as I saw this, I'm already in reaction mode, unplugging the cord and battery and hard restarting. No big deal, I do this all the time when I"m diagnosing unnecessary items for a new fresh clean install. Only, they are all the same unhappy face on a blue screen. This was like a full screen window (darker blue) and a new little window popped up talking about collecting information. Here again, it seemed as though this new 'guru meditation' (of sorts) was had full intent of making a report for MS.
What do you know about SnoopDos for Windows? I was just using it on my Amiga (emu). I never tried the Windows version.
Also, I was thinking about going to the local department store (whose initials just so happen to be BB) and looking at the computer scene here. (This HP2000's Vram shares with the cpu. So I'm getting less than a gig and a half of actual usable ram, + the av editing)
What are you liking, 32 gb's ram or more, in a destop nowadays, bargain shopping vs spare no expense??
Thank you very much! Brother Jaso

OK, that 'data collection' IS normal. You had a BSOD... something went wrong and the computer needed to be rebooted. Whenever you have an application fail you'll get a dialog box telling you the application has failed and data is being collected send to MS. YOU can cancel that if you want and close the application. The Blue Screen however is a different story. Something has compromised the OS and the PC needed to be rebooted. Data is collected to send to MS but you have no choice but to reboot after the data is collected. The RELIABILITY MONITOR (Search for it using Windows Search or Cortana is the easiest) will show you those 'problems'. Click on the date and you'll get the info. In all instances, especially the BSOD the info with full details (most not usable to you) will be in the Event Viewer. In you case a DUMP was collected to send to MS (you probably have that option set for full size). Never heard of SNOOPDOS but from Googling it I suspect you can get the same results by using some programs from SYSINTERNAL.COM, like Process Explorer. There are plenty of different ones there for different things. Another good place, NIRSOFT.NET, a lot of handy tools as well. I'm partial to Desktops (less heat problems, overall faster performance for less cost, expandable, and easy upgrade capability vs. a laptop. I like Dell's personally. Seem to have newer and better components in their PC's vs. others like HP or Lenovo. As a retired IBM'er I can get a good discount at Lenovo but still prefer Dell's. Their XPS 8900 line is very good, and you can catch the i7, 8GB (more than enough for almost everything and I do do AV movie creation from time to time or picture slideshow with all the editing going on before production), and always a discrete video card of 1GB or more. Runs around $750 or less (USD) and keep checking TECHBARGAINS.COM for those sales. They show one now for $675 ( www.techbargains.com/deal/427815/dell-xps-8900-desktop).
