Although starting to roll out on the 11th April you can download and install today. This might be useful because the servers are going to rattling on Tuesday I suspect and might take longer than quoted below.
NOTE: My Toshiba Q300 SSD (960gb) is partitioned. C is 300gb. The machine is an i7 Lenovo with 16gb ram running Windows 10 Pro retail, upgraded from Home by clean install.
The next big update for Microsoft’s ubiquitous Windows 10 operating system is here. The so-called Creators Update adds a host of new features from MS Paint reinvented to privacy tweaks.
The Creators Update will begin being pushed out to users via Windows Update on 11 April, but for those eager to get their hands on it early, it’s available via a manual update or a fresh install of Windows using the Media Creation Tool. It sounds ominous, but using its ability to upgrade the PC it’s running on is very straightforward. Here are the top seven features worth hitting update for:
Game Mode
Paint 3D
Night Light
Dynamic Lock
Edge with tabbed browsing
Start menu folders
Greater privacy
BEFORE GOING AHEAD MAKE AN BACKUP IMAGE WITH EITHER MACRIUM REFLECT OR AOMEI BACKUPPER.
DO NOT RELY ON THE WINDOWS BACKUP.
THERE IS AN OPTION TO REVERT BACK BUT I PREFER TO REIMAGE.
If you prepared to accept this mission go HERE>>>>> to get the updater. It is a small file. Click on the updater and your machine will be checked for CPU, ram and hardware. The download is in two parts and takes just over 30 mins. You now need to restart your machine and the installation begins and will take just over an hour.
After installation you will be offered the option of privacy setting. YOU NEED CHECK THIS because all settings are switched to on!
Following are 3 pics:
In the above C: properties you will see that the .old folder is 21.3gb and the Update folder is 20mb.
If you installing on a small SSD drive you may want to move the windows.old to an external drive temporarily to regain space; you might need to Take Ownership>>>>> of the folder to do this. It contains the option to recover. As I said I prefer to reimage but this is up to you!
FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
After rebooting once again Windows got to desktop in 15 seconds, about the same as before.
No drivers were changed but my jpg and png changed to Windows Photo as the default viewer. Photos also uploaded my pics to it!
An irritating thing, I did this Update on my Microsoft Account. MS decided to load my outlook.com emails into Mail and dumped it on the taskbar.....Did they not see I have Office 2016 Outlook running?
I will be deleting the windows.old folder. You may need to delete individual sub folders 1st because Windows says you need to be administrator (YOU ARE) but I believe the folder can be locked for 12 days in case you want to revert.
Another way to delete is by disk clean up but I'm sure this will work in Home Edition.
That's it.
Which ever way you take the Creators Update please feel free to post your comments bad or good.
EDITS, as and where problems found!
Just one point to note, if you are running 10 In Elevated Administrator mode you will find some problems.
I cannot run Office 2016 (365), it encounters an error which tells me to go CPL and repair. That option failed to open! Most peeps don't run in Admin but try it anyway.
Open CMD or PowerShell, run as administrator, copy and paste the following command
net user administrator /active:yes
Restart your machine and the new account will show depending on how you boot into 10. If you don't see it on boot just click 'switch user' and it should show.
If you are unsure in any way please ask here before taking the plunge.
