Sorry to take so long to reply. Lighthouse may have told you that I have been under the weather for some time.
Given that the UK led the way in fibre optics since the old GPO days we certainly have lagged behind. When the GPO became BT the infrastructure still retained mostly twisted pair runs, even well into internet spread. The delay in laying fibre was blamed on cost. As BT remained the main player, some smaller networks began to appear, Windsor Telecom, Telewest, Blueyonder, NTL and Vigin, for instance. They laid cables, either co-axial or fibre, initially to supple cable tv and telephone network. By doing so as the internet became more popular broadband 'always on' became the next phase. BT still relied on twisted pair. NTL and Telewest got swallowed up by Virgin as did Blueyonder. BT has only recently started fibre to the box....not the DOOR. So we have ended up with Virgin as the only fibre to the door broadband. Speeds are 'up to' 300 mbps at the moment. Certainly they have really gone to town on the fibre infrastructure. Openreach, the network provider only laid to the box, a terrible rip off for what was charged. BT had a part of Openreach which reall ywas not fair for other providers. It comes at a price because of this, Mr Ransom, sorry, Branson has us by the short and curlies. Openreach is now to be a separate company. Under the present system, BT, TalkTalk, PlusNet etc are reliant on a partially built network that only supplies the final connection via twisted pair, the longer the TP run the less mbps. Average is around 30-40. My experience with Virgin was not a good one nor was my previous account with BT. Virgin speeds were awful, after 8 years I got fed up with a raft of price rises and less than satisfactory speeds. I elected to go with SKY. 78 mbps was the fastest and this was stable, as was the price....THEN another price rice for broadband and calls really peed me off. I am now with Vodafone and have been now for 2 years. Consistent speed is 78 mbps. NO line rental and my deal is for all calls landline and mobile free 24/7. I saved over £26 per month. Virgin packages are just too expensive and they want you to sign up to more TV etc. Not interested in TV. Vodafone don't run a tv /STB option (yet). Have a look at Vodafone here: >>>>>
