Ok, the ipconfig option doesn't work. I get a little black command window flashing by but it is gone before you can see a thing. Dell site states they don't have this make anymore and to look for a different model.

Sarah, sounds like you are running it in a Run box, not a full Command Prompt window !
and what is the full model of the comp ?

Sarah, unless you have TWO network RJ45 connectors, the ON-BOARD LAN CONTROLLER must be enabled. If you do have two, one would be on a card on the PCI buss, the other towards the top coming off the motherboard near the power connector. If you do have two, you can enable the on-board LAN and then using the cable connect it into one of them and use DEVICE MANAGER to disable the one you are NOT using. The NETWORK SHARING CENTER will show you which one is ACTIVE.

Hi guys,
It's incredibly hot here, so last night I've disconnected the pc, because it was adding heat :P LH - I tried both, but got the same results. A window that flashes by. It's a Dell Inspiron 560. Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor E5700 (3.00GHz, 800FSB, 2MB cache) 4096MB Dual Channel DDR3 [4x1024] Memory
@ Irv - none show up in the device manager and I think it only has one connector, the one on the motherboard.

Hi Sarah,
Did you try Mikes initial suggestion to remove and re-seat the NIC as an orange light is usually signs of damage/corruption ?
Do You have another NIC you can try in its place, this may determine if it is the card itself or worse an issue with the MOBO ?

OK, then it is ON-BOARD, and you MUST in the SET-UP (F2 before booting) turn it on... Picture of where to PLUG THE CABLE IN, PAGE 9.For IPCONFIG, you MUST open a COMMAND window, not enter it into RUN which is what I assume you did. If so, in RUN, enter CMD and you'll have an open COMMAND window you can enter IPCONFIG /ALL in and then MARK and COPY the output and PASTE it in here. One other thing, I don't know what you are using, a modem or router to connect the cable too, but if a MODEM or using the same RJ45 plug on the router that had another computer connected to it, you MUST reboot that device first (modem or router) and then turn on the computer. Otherwise it may not connect due to mismatched MAC address.

Do You have another NIC you can try in its place, this may determine if it is the card itself or worse an issue with the MOBO ? On some Dell's the color indicates the speed. However, since the DRAWING ON PAGE 9 shows the cable connect via the motherboard, not a PCI slot, she can't do the reseating. My Dell shows as ORANGE as I'm connected at 1GB. In addition, there are TWO lights. The ORANGE one is on solid, and the other is YELLOW which flashes when there is activity on the cable. I think if you have a 100MB connection the color is Green?

@ GS - Didn't look like something I'd easily remove and re-seat. More like it is an integral part of the board. Will open her up again tomorrow and have another look and maybe take pictures. But your suggestion is just what I'm trying to find out ;) Can I replace it and get the pc back to working normally?
@ Irv - I've turned it on in the Set-up :) And I know where to put the cable in!
I did try ipconfig both in run and in a command window, but the results were the same. Will try again tomorrow. Maybe I was too hasty.
In my house it's a modem that also works as a router (had a seperate router before, but didn't need that anymore when I got a new modem - can do wireless now without hassle, but not focussing on that on this pc). I don't know what my mum has got. Probably just a modem. Never had to reboot anything before. Used to plug in the cable in my pc and then my laptop and also my second pc and never a problem. I also don't think that is the problem - the pc just acts as if there is no hardware you can use to set up a connection. See my screenshot of the device manager above. But I'll reboot it all the same when I give it another try tomorrow.
Edit: you both posted while I was writing ;) And irv is absolutely right. So reseating is no option :(
Can I add a card on the PCI bus and would that one work even though the one on the motherboard is not functional?

If the ON-BOARD LAN was off in Setup, you'll not have seen it in Device Manager. Once turned on, you should NOW see it. Don't understand "I did try ipconfig both in run and in a command window, but the results were the same."? Do you mean what you see or that the windows closed? It should NOT close if you ran it in a COMMAND WINDOW. If you plug a cable into any router or modem (modems usually have a single RJ45 port) and it was either the first device ever plugged in or the same one as there before, you'll be OK. Plugging in a device to a port that had a device prior plugged in may not work and be recognized. Rebooting fixes that problem. Now assuming the NETWORK ADAPTER that is on the motherboard IS damaged, you can get a cheap NETWORK PCI CARD and use that. Just disable the ON-BOARD LAN adapter in Set-up. However, if this did occur, either voltage line fluctuation damaged that particular part of the motherboard, or a lightning hit to the cable/phone line traveled along the lines into the computer, you COULD have other damage. Run a COMPLETE SET of DIAGNOSTICS from Dell on that computer. Need to check the manual for that machine, way to do it varies. Some are run under Windows and you'd find them in ALL PROGRAMS, some appear on the SHIFT-F8 menu, and others will have it appear on the F12 menu before Windows starts. Still others require you to boot to a provided DVD. Might also be able to USE THIS LINK. You can also find the diagnostics to run under the DRIVERS AND DOWNLOADS for the computer ( www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-560) if you do not have them it seems.

I still don't (that was what I tested yesterday)
That was what happened, but I might have been too hasty. Will test it again tomorrow.
That is brilliant!
Concerning other damage: so far I've not found any problems popping up at first sight. No alarmbells going off in the deicemanager either and the disk seems to be allright too. Must note that the pc was turned off when the supposed line fluctuation took place.
I'd found that but I have virtually the same pc myself, so it wants to instantly run instead of download. Haven't found out yet how to only download the setup. Must look into it tomorrow.
Thanks for all the time you put into this and thinking for me, especially when I'm constantly running off ;)

I still don't (that was what I tested yesterday) Under Device Manager there is an ACTION menu item. If there are device it can't see, sometimes it will have a RESCAN. Also, under VIEW is SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES, try that too. Otherwise D/L from Dell the NETWORK driver and try installing it.

@ LH - amazon.de warns me the surgemaster is a UK product and if I'm sure it's compatible. How can I make sure? I'm not at mum's place and she can't send me pictures at the moment :(
@ Irv, will bootup the pc later today and get started for once ;)
Edit: booted it and here's the ipconfig:
