With no funeral, retrospectives, accolades, or notes of sadness, the Windows 7 era has come to an end. What does this mean for the vast number of Windows users? Apparently, not much. New machines are equipped with Windows 8 and Windows 10 is just around the corner. We can now see Windows 7 for what it was: a placeholder designed to assuage the hordes of critics who did not like Vista. What a great loss>>>>>

What a great loss>>>>>With 57% of all PC users on Windows 7, there is no end in sight. I think the W7 users will be even harder to move than the XP users. W10 is not an OS for the PC. It is a mobile OS with touch. There are still a lot of W7 machines being sold. We just bought a beautiful HP desktop with W8.1 for $300 for a friend. This is also available with W7 - but $200 more expensive for exactly the same identical machine. Still, people are buying it. I actually like W8.1. I have 4 systems with it and use them quasi the same way as I use my W7 systems.

AS you all know, I am just a fumbling. bumbling grey haired granny, but always interested in how things work. The recent HP Lappy , that daughter bought me, New Year obviously already has windows. Now, I have usually been an ACER fan, and thought HP was rubbish,, but have to say, that apart from the tinny casing, the workings seem to be working well. I like others, preferred VISTA, but when I had this one, I bit the bullet and mastered main thrust of win 8,and now, like whs, find it very manageable,, In the end like XP,one has to upgrade, so 'go for it' you maybe surprised.

Stell and I have got used to win 8 now on the Lenovos, pretty well sussed out now. They do what is required. Both run classic shell and boot to desktop.
But I do like win 7 which I run on the main pc and the HP laptop (ultimate on PC and pro on HP). I suppose it's that we get used to something and change can be daunting as we get older perhaps!!

I have my W8.1 working very much like W7. There are a lot of tips how to work with W8, from members here and also online. Just have to pick and choose the one's you want to try to make W8 how you want to use it. I have mine running somewhat like whs I think.

I don't have Win 8, 8.1 or soon to be 8.2 (Win10) and nor do I want them, I have played a little with the previews of each but never really enjoyed them they just don't have that 'je ne sais quoi' that other OSs have/had.
Which is why it's no secret that I plan to go almost fully Open Source depending on how long Vista lasts on my system once it dies, Bye Bye MicroSoft for good.

Depends what I'm doing. I do like RoboLinux a lot it's very powerful and works smoothly. I also use AVLinux as it has all manner of Audio/Visual programs built in especially one of my favs, Blender

Depends what I'm doing. I do like RoboLinux a lot it's very powerful and works smoothly. I also use AVLinux as it has all manner of Audio/Visual programs built in especially one of my favs, BlenderSorry to say but I consider the OS to be a vehicle. It needs to deliver and 'go' where I want and not the driving force of what I'll use. I 'want' the same standard utilities almost everyone else wants, that is e-mail, browser, text composer, picture and video viewer, and a few other everyday tasks. For these, generally speaking any OS will deliver. However it is all in the details that determine the OS you might use. Games I play, Simulations, Video 'composers', and photo programs (not viewers) that make the difference in the OS I would run. Having worked with OS/2 and trying to get 'comparable' Windows programs sometimes was NOT an easy task. Hardest were the ones tied to hardware, printer drivers, webcam drivers, USB devices, etc. Even today many h/w makers do not even have Mac drivers. Besides, drivers usually are only 1/2 the story. Many have programs that control the devices as well, like my HP All-In-One. From my desktop I can control ALL functions on the printer which just so happens to be wireless and not near my computer. Yeah, if I could somehow load the fax or scanner via my computer it would be perfect Don't forget, it is the APP that controls the choice of OS, remember the IBM PC in the beginning. It was VisiCalc that made one want the PC, not DOS, and not an Apple II or other machines out at that time.

We can now see Windows 7 for what it was: a placeholder designed to assuage the hordes of critics who did not like Vista. What a great loss>>>>>W7 was GREAT compared to Vista. Vista was slow and clunky. My last computer came with Vista. It was a Core2 Duo and my wife's machine was a Dual Core Pentium. I ran benchmarks on both computers and her 2 year old Dual Core was just as fast? Huh? Couldn't believe it. When W7 came out I updated and immediately saw a significant performance gain.. Just like XP, people do not want to leave W7 either. MS doesn't want to support multiple OS, especially now that phone s/w is also involved and they run on tablets as well. 'Shutting down' W7 was a way to get to one OS platform. I think MS is still playing some games though with XP and W7 specifically for Businesses. Rumor is W10 upgrade will be FREE for only the FIRST year. A gentle suggestion for those still on W7 to get off of it NOW.

That's one of the reasons I like Robo as you can have the community develop specific drivers if not readily compatible (although there is a cost involved). It all comes down to personal preference, I like using OSs that aren't necessarily 'the commercial factor' simply because I like to try to find my own way round things. As I say "Personal Preference".

There are some nice Linux distros and others are awful. I have settled on Mint Mate as you can see here. But I still run Windows 7 and 8.1 as my main systems. There are too many Windows programs that have no real equivalent in Linux and running them thru the Wine is not always successful. I could run Linux on the iron and Windows in a virtual partition. But that sounds odd to me. I do it the other way around or run Linux from an external device. Works just as well.

I know you're a big fan of Mint Mate and I know it's a good OS, I have a couple of friends that use it one of which is a Joomla programmer and has built a website using Mint, but yes there are quite a few really nasty distros out there. I do have Win7 in a VBox on Robo but it's mainly used for test purposes of software and/or malware.
I always tell people to run Linux as the host and Windows inside a VBox as it 'plays' better than the other way round.
