OK, posted about my computer issues elsewhere. Now have a new one, but used outlook as my mail client before. Now don't have that available.
Does anyone know of an alternative email client which will import everything from outlook? (on another computer). All the ones I have looked at do not support outlook.

Hi Brian, Although I have Outlook 2010, it is not my default Email client. I prefer to use Thunderbird>>>>> because it handles my multiple email accounts much better than Outlook or Windows Mail. Also the back up ( Mozbackup>>>>> ) program is excellent for exporting to other PCs the easy way. 3rd party software to aid importing from Outlook should help; support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switching-thunderbirdAll these are free open source software.

According to Mozilla, Thunderbird should import Outlook (pst) files. But having downloaded it, the outlook selection is greyed out, and hovering the mouse over it brings up the message "currently disabled due to bug 1175055".
Thunderbird would have been my first choice. But I do need to get my old emails.

Hi Brian Granny Q,assume you have made a pst file before you try to import.( just wondered if this might be your problem. Import Outlook information from an Outlook data file NOTE Before you can import Outlook information, you must have already exported the Outlook information from an email account to a .pst file. If you have not yet done this, see Export Outlook information to an Outlook data file earlier in this article. In Outlook, click File > Open & Export > Import/Export. This starts the Import and Export Wizard. support.office.com/en-gb/article/Use-Outlook-to-move-information-between-email-accounts-52335a27-aa7c-4d3a-96d7-6477bdeb85c0support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/287070Just another thought. hope you get some info and do post your journey as this will help others checking in. Regards Granny Kate

According to Thunderbird, it can't import .pst files, you have to have Outlook running. So I get confused.
That second link is useful though, as I will need to move the data to a different computer.

Well I thought I had had a brainwave. Export the files from Outlook as CSV, then import them to Thunderbird.
Did it with the contacts, but just got rubbish in Thunderbird. And Thunderbird will not import CSV mail files.
Back to the drawing board.

Nice one Kate, but unfortunately, in the "read more" section, it says this, "It is no longer supported by recent versions of Mozilla Thunderbird"

This is one of the problems with so many blasted updates, they screw things up for sure.
Do you have a copy of the .pst file?
The days of free Office trials to do this are pretty much over so that option is not on.
Do you have a copy of office from your previous install? The key may work, or the install could work even tho asking for activation for 30 days. Which means you can load the .pst file.
If not then please contact me for I have another option. My email address is in my profile.
Also, you could login to your webmail accounts, btinternet, gmail etc and change your settings from POP3 to Imap, Thunderbird will then import automatically all your mails and contacts
Gmail will automatically find the port protocols, bt might want you to add the port numbers and ssl etc.
General BT settings are
imap.btinternet.com / 993 / SSL (inbound)
smtp.btinternet.com / 465 / SSL (outbound)
But then yahoo is involved in the BT fiasco, so might not work.
This is why I prefer Thunderbird over Outlook, all accounts are easily backed up and transferred to another PC without issue

I have saved the inbox as a PST file, also the address book.
I don't have a copy of Office 2007 which is the one I used. Gone missing somewhere.
According to the information BTinternet gave, the servers are mail.btinternet.com
Are you saying that if I changed an existing POP account to IMAP Thunderbird will then import all the mails I had already downloaded under POP?

imap should import from the server saved emails and contacts but sent folder perhaps not, that needs a setup option in the email account.
However, providers have different ways controlling this. One problem with BT was the way they used Yahoo and I think this buggered up many accounts.
Go into your BT webmail and see the options. All emails will be there but the sent folder might be blank
mail.btinternet.com is the pop3 login

All installed and working. Many thanks.
Thought I could import a .pst file but outlook stopped responding halfway through and only imported half the messages. So I copied and pasted the complete file out of the old computer into the new one. That did everything including the message rules.
I think with hindsight I did it in the wrong order, I should have copied and pasted the outlook.pst file as soon as Outlook was installed. As it was, I set up the accounts first, it downloaded a couple of new messages which of course I then lost when I transferred the file.
Anyway, thanks for all the help. I do sing your praises on other forums.

Excellent news Brian, thanks for the update. Hope the other software, Word etc, replaces what you lost.
EDIT: Can we mark this as solved?
