Does it happen in any other browser?
If not then try resetting FF
FF tab --- Help --- Troubleshooting Info --- Reset FF (right hand side)

Kate, you have Norton's Toolbar by any chance or more precisely, Norton's Vulnerability Protection?
That has been doing that same thing to me on both FF and IE. Funny part is that it doesn't always happen? That is I'll see that before I go to a site, either switch a tab to it or start it, and the next time it doesn't happen?
Something is wrong I suspect with Norton. They had to 'update' it to work with W8.1 and might have broken something.
Resetting FF probably removed the toolbars and add-ons.

Hi Irv No, Norton mine is Bullguard, always have been, sometimes to good CHOL:) like....at the moment it takes about 2 to 3 mins to complete firewall search before connecting to Wireless.A small price to pay for checking and TRYYYYYYING to stay clean duh!!!!!! Incidentally when checking through search on yahoo, there were many complaints of my original issue,,,,but not one with GS's simple and trusted advice....So hopes this may help if someone who, checks in with same problem. Yep resetting FF removes toolbars and addons and as I said I like tabs below, all a bit of a faff... Thought!!!!!As I am typing this,I daily do a quick scan with Bullguard, and it kept telling me in a 'vulnerability report' that FF needed upgrading, as I said FF was uptodate, BUTTTTT there must have been something wrong, that it picked it up on the check....

Kate, quite possibly if you restore all the toolbars and add-ons your problem might return. Something could be causing that by trying to go somewhere or even due to a cookie that is a 3rd party. You know, I hit something similar, FF needs to be updated, but the day before I updated to 26.0? However it did open in a new tab and FF switched to it. Not the normal way of FF telling me a new version was available. Normally a dialog box pop-up appears on the lower right I recall? I think that happened when I clicked on a link (I forget now)? First thing I did was check the version I had via HELP, ABOUT, and that said I was up-to-date. I just closed that tab and continued what I was doing. Suspect that web site and that specific link was hacked? Maybe it wasn't? Something could be in FF 26.0 (if that is what you have) that triggers this? There was a virus like this many versions ago, but it put up a RED dialog box. Wonder if a variant has shown up or some code in FF that mimics that virus in structure? I Googled this, nothing recent nor more reports of the above happening?

Hi Irv.. I think maybe a plugin..media player...or yahoo mail notifier....
AS like you I normally wait until FF sends an update reminder ( bottom right) but strange how 'Bullguard' picked it up as vulnerabilty needing updating. Even though running it through Help> check updates.done .
In fact they are telling me java is needing updating, which I do not use but is in fact disabled.
So will wait and see if anything re appears. Doh!! the joys of trying to be ahead of the hackers etc. Grr!!!!!!
