Not using W8 here but good to see AVG Free still ranks high up in the scoring. Thanks for the post Irv.

I don't know why that article was W8.x specific? Unless it was to pull in the latest MS offerings and speed/loads on the most recent Windows version only? Another interesting place to look at, krebsonsecurity.com/, see what he has to say about the Target break-in. 40 'business' A/V's for POS terminal s/w didn't find the infection. Supposedly they waited 6 days before using the code. Doesn't give one any 'warm fuzzies' on any day zero exploits being found does it? They have to be activated before they are found I guess? Wasn't clear though if they catch it now?

MS did say that Defender should only be considered as a secondary defence, and use your preference for the main AV.

MS did say that Defender should only be considered as a secondary defence, and use your preference for the main AV. Yes, but how many people 'swear by' Defender and use that only? Check these links: windows8tipstricks.com/turn-windows-defender-windows-8/experts.windows.com/w/experts_wiki/163.aspx " There is no need to install any third-party anti-malware product. WD is there, protecting you. " www.maximumpc.com/windows_defender_vs_avast_2013, although a comparison, the implication is it can be used alone, not with another protection. www.7tutorials.com/windows-defender-windows-8-and-windows-7-what-s-new-and-different, "Users may know it and dismiss it as a lightweight spyware scanner that is helpful, but by no means comprehensive. That was true of the old Windows Defender; it could never be used as a sole means of protection from malware, but that is not true of the version included in Windows 8." It seems 'some' think for W8.x it can be used alone? No thanks, I'll stick with Norton thank you.
