My friend has a Acer netbook with AVG installed, it is slow to me but my thinking is... would uninstalling AVG and replacing with other make much difference?

Hi greebal, You didn't say what version of AVG your running, or what OS. I run AVG free on this W7 machine without any problems. You can try temporarily disable of AVG and see if it makes a difference. Temporary only.

Hi warlock, it is not my machine and until I see it again my guess is that it is running AVG free but I know it runs W7 Starter OS. Just read in the past that AVG can slow a machine down, don't know if that is still the case.

That is interesting for me, I was thinking of using Avast, I'm currently using MSE worth a change?

I did use MSE for a while and found it a bit lightweight (and have tested most of the others over the years) but I always come back to Avira in the end. Even MS says don't use MSE as your primary AV.

Hmm... guess I should ditch MSE and use one of the others.

Whilst we don't advise to use 2 AV's on a system (they tend to have conflicts), I believe you can run MSE with another, tho have not tested that yet.

I agree, I have read enough not use 2 AV's on a system, getting back to the original question, which is basically will AVG as opposed to others make the machine run slower, warlock says no prob but I notice that he will take the blame job sorted.

AVG has always been heavy on resources. Not advisable to use it. In my opinion. Certainly I wouldn't.

Respect LH's opinion also. There are a lot of good AV's out there. So, use what you think is going to work for you. Two AV's don't play nice except MSE (which don't trust for my only AV) will usually work with what you have. But, if you trust what your using why use more than one. AVG always has been good to me. Run Malwarebytes and SAS once a week been good for awhile. Years actually. Common sense helps too, being careful on downloads and such. If speed is still the problem, don't think you will notice a difference. More than likely a ISP thing. Let us know how you make out.

greebalIts just a thought but you may want your friend to post a list of their start up items as some may not be necessary or even needed, it may help to speed things up.
