Here's a theory ... all humans are born with "flexible" feet which results in dragging our feet along the ground with that annoying shuffling noise. Those of us with "rigid" feet had mothers who would (with annoyance at the sound) yell at us to "pick up your feet when you walk!". This then resulted in the development of muscle and sinew that made us members of the rigid feet class.
