hey guys, vista, home prem., 32 bit, firefox v21.0 site is hbogo. been catching up on a series that theres been tons of hype about. (Game Of Thrones). anyways .... this problem started about two / maybe three episodes ago. video is choppy and dialogue and events aren't actually synched as a result. also freezes up just momentarily every little bit. what ive done ... cleared cookies & cache ... made sure there were'nt browser plug-ins / add-ons updating in the background ... updated browser ... updated flash player. still the same. took a look at task manager and saw cpu usage was pegged at 100% !!!!

Hi Vis, That is a paid site so I can't test it. Suggest trying another browser.

First thing I'd try is IE, you should also have it, just to remove FF as the cause. You can also run FireFox in SAFE MODE as that will disable add-ons in case they are the cause. However, it could be external to FF, especially as you said it just happened recently, although FF was recently updated. To help rule that out, in TASK MANAGER, sort the CPU column so the usage percentage is at the TOP, then see what is using the CPU. Post a screen shot of that please. What is the speed of your Internet connection? Is it wireless? Does this problem occur at all times of the day? If you go back a few episodes where there were no problems, are there problems now? You are running Norton, so 'sleep' it for a few minutes and see if that clears the problem. Do you have system back-ups? If you do, save away what you have now, and restore one from when you didn't experience the problem, see if that fixes it? If you stop using that site and close the browser, does CPU usage decrease and by how much? All suggestions and question that answers might help discovering 'why'?

hey Irv! thanks for chiming in! okay so i can answer a few of your questions but will have to come back a little later to give more details. have to run out for a little while to run some errands ... connection is wired :and yes the playback issue is the same at different times of the day. • will post to let you know if it does the same with previously viewed episodes where i know for sure it didnt do it.
• have not tried putting Norton to sleep while using the site / watching but will try that out as well ...
• always a pretty fresh image on standby, but have not considered that just yet. will note as possible option ...
• YES!, if i stop viewing a video on the site CPU drops back down to what seems normal usage.
will post back with more info on the stuff i wasnt able to provide at the moment.

For a single device trying to stream, 20Mbps plenty, so it isn't the network connection unless the HBOGO servers are overloaded? I use the iPad app and only rarely see a minute stall or pixelation, so I'll assume it isn't them either. Still could be an intermediary server?
I did a TRACERT from here and once it reached ElSegundo CA. all requests timed out. Did NOT see any delays or long times at any hop.
Know 'who/what' is the CPU hog will help. Knowing if IE has the same problem will too.

Hi Guys Just chipping in ...not specifically cpu related but may give another avenue to search. as you suggested above , I was always check it out with IE first to see if it is an FF fault.....especially after an FF upgrade if prob suddenly starts. Since FF upgrade I have problems with one or two different sights viewing 'playback' Have had to download an extra plugin...see the link... kb.mozillazine.org/Video_or_audio_does_not_play Granny Kate

hi guys sorry for not following up sooner ... so the problem persists and ive ruled out my connection and browser. same results when i tried with IE. i tried uninstalling / re-installing flash player and same thing. reset modem n router, same thing. ... the only thing i didnt try simply because im not willing to, is downgrade to a previous version of firefox or flash player. just decided that if its some update thats causing the issue, that it hopefully iron itself out in time. luckily i dont watch enough "tv / movies" online to where its gonna continue to be a huge problem and will try it out again some time a little later to see if things improve. in the meantime i went and downloaded the remaining episodes and watched them so im all caught up. will update soon as .... thanks all for chiming in!! much appreciated!!

To rule out ANYTHING related to a plug-in or Add-On you could try FF with a NEW profile and add back in any that are needed to view the episodes.
Open up the folder FF is in in a COMMAND PROMPT and enter FIREFOX /PROFILEMANAGER (there are more that one way to do this, but it depends on the Windows version you are using). Once that opens create a NEW profile and see what happens. Can do it again and go back to your OLD profile after the test. Also you can run FF in SAFE MODE, bascially under HELP is RESTART WITH ADD-ONS DISABLED.
