Brian interesting find, which in your case solved the problem.
I am still a 7 user on my main machine BTW. In the past there I have had issues with 7 updates 32bit AND 64bit. To say they were frustrating requires little addition now.
My preferred setting are to let me know before I install, not recommended as M$ suggests. This allowed some time to research before I went ahead. Interesting to note BTW, M$ optionals were....optional. The optionals were mainly concerned with driver (etc) updates. I never went down that road. Too many roundabouts on a one way street. They are not required. I prefer the driver from the hardware site, if I need it.
In winX this situation is more severe for the home user in that there is very little control over the updates which in 10, ARE enforced upon you. I can really screw wireless connection, printer connections and graphic cards.
My experience with win 7 updates was to ensure that certain apps were turned off when I installed them. Disable: AVG Avira Avast MSE SAS MBAM
Ever in edit!

Also it's much much quicker than online and without the multiple fails you can get, which is more time expended updating further!!

With all the little problems that hit the internet last week I thought I ought to check my wife's laptop. It now runs Win 7 (was Vista). I discovered it had not installed any update since june last year. She has a habit of dismissing any message she doesn't understand, so I changed the settings to automatic. Tried to get new updates to download but nothing seemed to be happening. Had a look here, and today went back to try to get the updates to happen, only to find most had been downloaded. A few minutes later and it asked for a restart. I did disable MSE which was running which might have helped.

Ah Brian, the windows updates in win 7. June last will of course have 'many' and this is really a pain in the butt.
One of the problems with 'multi' updates is that some fail, Microsoft never really got that sorted did it!! In Windows prior to 8 some updates failed, so it meant just going back to updates in CPL, try again and select but a few as opposed to all of them. Still a pain but that is a resolve
You didn't post a link BTW.
When Wife's PC running good, cooking breakfast, immediately do a back up / image of the system!
Disabling MSE does not have effect on updates, MSE should be running so that also can update the OS
