I am getting fed up with constant nagging from Avast and would like to revert to MS.(whatever it's called now) especially as they say it's a lot better now. Can somone tell me how to kill off avast in order to let Win defender take over?

Greybeard, with AV progs you should always use their own uninstallers ( unless you have used a pro version of a tracing installer in the first place)

Greybeard hi Are you running Windows 10? Revo free in advanced mode should do this quite well, tick all the tree boxes, (select all) delete, do the same with the next screen if it comes up, finish. That should have taken out the little bits that tend to hang around the registry! Restart the machine and either MSE or Windows defender will now be active. Check and update definitions. BTW: in Windows 10 Defender is more efficient than before, realtime etc. In previous MSE you could set a scan in settings only. Many 3rd party A/vs stop MSE or defender working so the two don't conflict and by default with MS you cannot start or restart the Defender service. You may see this! Windows Defender is the default A/v on Ten and it should serve you well. The uninstall process works in 7 and 8. The only difference is that it was called Microsoft Security Essentials. Hope this helps But your Operating System would help further, Windows 7, 8 or 10. Mike

Forgot to post this info for anyone interested (I am in hospital at the moment and things are running slightly behind!)
--------------------------------------------
Defender is usually disabled by default by other anti virus/antimalware programs. However, annoyingly, WD will fire up a window telling you to turn it on. Well, you can't.
Also annoyingly this has different events on some winx pcs I've worked on.
The easiest way is to disable via the registry or Group Policy if running pro. regedit method may not be permanent because old MS might just turn it on again with the next update1
HERE ARE THE OPTIONS:
regedit in Home Edition. WIN key + r, type regedit, the editor will open.
locate: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
If you don't see DWORD DisableAntiSpyware, right-click on an empty space, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the key DisableAntiSpyware.
Double-click the newly created key, and set the value from 0 to 1.
Resart PC.
gpedit in Pro WIN key + r type 'gpedit.msc'
locate: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender
In the right hand pane double click Turn off Windows Defender
Apply, OK. Restart. Restart will make the icon disappear from the notification area.
NOW, THIS MAY NOT SUIT EVERYONE. I HAVE IT SET THIS WAY BECAUSE I USE MALWARETEBYTES PREMIUM AND SecureAPlus PREMIUM SCANNING BECAUSE OF THE TYPE OF DOWNLOADING AND TESTING DONE ON THIS MACHINE. THEREFORE WD IS OF NO USE HERE!!
You may want to copy and paste the above into notepad and printoff
