It has been reported that Ccleaner may have been hacked, there are reports around the web giving advice etc, as they do.
WTF happened?:
Hackers have successfully breached CCleaner’s security to inject malware into the app and distribute it to millions of users. Security researchers at Cisco Talos discovered that download servers used by Avast (the company that now owns CCleaner) were compromised to distribute malware inside CCleaner. “For a period of time, the legitimate signed version of CCleaner 5.33 being distributed by Avast also contained a multi-stage malware payload that rode on top of the installation of CCleaner,” says the Talos team. Avast, Avast you varmint!
There were comments circulating around Avast taking 'command' of Piriform's brilliant easy peasy no effort crap cleaner. It appears this might be so, I am no lover of Avast personally.
How does this affect you? Well immediately, not, however it would appear that malware has been inserted in some versions 32bit and 64bit and MAY change the way it works in the future.
Some sites are SO concerned that they are recommending at least an image recovery (erm, how does that work, an update may still silently instal) or the worst a complete reinstal of your OS!! Ouch...not necessary.
If you have a concern, fear ye not!!
Merely do the following; uninstall with Revo free>>>>> in advanced mode. Allow the normal installer to run, when that is completed click the scan button to look for leftovers in the registry and preferences.
Now download the new version either 32 or 64 bit here: www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
I scanned and tested as safe.
Note:
All old settings / preferences will be gone (Avast ye) so you will have to apply those again, cookie clearing, Firefox and Thunderbird session, passwords etc.
Although my version did not appear to be corrupt I still went through the above the above procedure.
First run will take a while longer than normal.
Hope this helps
