Regarding the make/model of the old desktop
it is a emachine 4260, Intel Celeron D processor 345
is it still worth using it with linux?

I thought so,
she was just going to bin it but I said maybe use Zorin or Mintmate. Seeing as it works ok I couldn't see the point of trashing it.

She wants to use the free Avast AV on the new Toshiba. This is from the new Toshiba quick set up guide. If McAfee is not activated can Avast be installed and then get McAfee off the machine?

I haven't used Avast in many a year, but it is lighter than AVG I think (tho I still prefer Avira) and you should take McAfee off first as per Mikes instructions, before you install the next one.

She does use Avira on her old machine but wants Avast on the new one. Thanks for confirming that McAfee should be removed first. Hopefully the removal using Mikes info will work,
