Ok Guys back from a wonderful visit to the grandchildren, one, would like to play minecraft with granny long distance.
He tells me it is FREE to download, and you guys all know how we love anything free. When I looked for a safe download, 'softonic' looks as though it is to have to pay.
So as usual I eed your help. Will be back on in morning ..thanks....Kate

Hi Kate. Just had a look around the web. The demo version is free (but I don't think you can do much, or anything with that) otherwise you have to pay to play.
It seems to be a one time payment, but if you are not playing on line, could be free.

Hi Kate, Not a gamer but, thought I'd give your question a go. I tried downloads from three different sites. First one I tried was just a trial version, 2nd one AVG virus protection came on warning of a Trojan which it removed. Third one I tried had various other software junk it wanted to install with it, you could go to advanced and not install some of it but, some you had to install or the the game won't install. Then after some more reading found that if you want the full version for free It would be an illegal download. Unless you want to take a chance with utorrent, (Highly recommend you don't)and download illegally, I couldn't find a site. If your grandson says there is a free to download site, might be a good idea to ask him what the site is. The young'uns might know more. I tried, sorry the results were not good. Edit: Have a look here you can play for awhile before you decide to buy. help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/425381help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/325947-where-can-i-buy-minecraft-

As far as I'm aware minecraft was a purchase game and has been for a long time, there may be a online version which may be free but you do have to sign up for it, and even then it may just be a trial.

Just wait for his call "I got a virus" and Kate, be very aware that that Softonic download may include loads of unwanted crap.

It isn't only Softonic LH. Wife got hit hard downloading Solsuite 2014 which she had paid for in Aug. for Solsuite 2013 (1 year free updates). Started playing it and it said there was an update. You get it from C|NET and she did the 'automatic' install after the D/L. Now I don't know who did what, but on Cnet I've seen that happen on many FREE files I get from them. This one was quite sneaky too. I know better and always use the CUSTOM install as the standard one always usually loads their d/l'er and Bing Toolbar I recall. My wife chose the custom. That meant the next two items went on her system as well. CONDUIT junk, browser homes page set to its search page, add-ons that took you to their site when you searched for anything, changed the Search engine to them, and in all three browsers she had no less. Another piece of junk came in too, I forget what though? Once she figured out she had a problem called me to look at it. It all showed up in Add/Remove as well, but that didn't clean out everything. I decided to get the file and try and install it. I know enough to do the custom install. Unchecked the d/l'er and toolbar box and continues. Saw a license, figure it was for the program and then pressed next. Then ANOTHER license appeared, read this one, for Conduit and pressed DECLINE, but I couldn't go back to decline whatever I accepted? NEXT installed the game. Hmm, couldn't find anything installed? Next day I was using Firefox and took a link. There was a pop-up for a game? I've seen these types of pop-ups occasionally but thought nothing of it and closed it. Started getting these for different things every 2 or 3 times. Looked at my Add-ons, there was AutomatedGameUpdater or something like that? Found in my UnInstall program listed as installed the same date as the game... Sneaky, you have to READ every EUL presented to you otherwise you let junk in it seems. I've seen ones where the 'extra' stuff is at the end of the license for what you are actually going be installing and you'd miss it if you don't read it all. I delete these immediately. Don't install the program. I now use CNET only as a LAST resort when looking for a file. I'm pretty sure they are the ones doing the packaging, not the file supplier. I could be wrong.

Irv, I know full well, that it isn't just Softonic. But I downloaded a small app from them this morning, and was shocked with what came with it. And a mates Java install the other day, was even worse. (Don't know why he wanted Java anyway)

One of those downloads I tried for Minecraft yesterday, required Java. At least that's what it said. Don't know if the purchased game needs it or not. Didn't check.

CHOL:) I am still trying to figure, where best to download, but as Irv said" dont download" makes me wonder. I am careful and always try and scroll right through the terms etc as he said they sneakly try to add somethings unless you tick them for a NO.

Maybe "Don't D/l" is a bit too strong. I will say LEGITIMATE sites may package or allow files with basic crap/unnecessary junk attached to the desired object you want, but hardly ever 'bad' stuff. Not that re-directing my home page or search engine, forcing my searches to go to somewhere I see first, or even 'capturing' some user type usage data can be considered bad, but more an intrusion of privacy or changing what I wanted to what they want it to be. Best part, most if not ALL of these are easily removed (however, a novice probably has NO chance). Let's face it, TANSTAAFL as they say, basically people like to make money. Packaging may get them a fraction of a cent (USD for every d/l install, at the cost of your displeasure. Some unfortunately hide that they are installing 'extra stuff' better than others.

I am careful and always try and scroll right through the terms etc as he said they sneakly try to add somethings unless you tick them for a NO. Well, they HIDE those check boxes well now. For instance many on the FIRST page will show 2 choices, AUTOMATIC or CUSTOM. Others say STANDARD or ADVANCED, and some a mixture. Too many times though, when you click on Custom or Advanced what you discover all that it allows is you to change the install location. They 'feed' on this and most 'novice' computer users only have one drive. Having clicked on Custom or Advanced many times and seen this they just don't do it again. Poof, they get the garbage. Many, like my wife, got fooled as you normally EXPECT an EULA that you have to agree too. How many people read even what is displayed vs. scrolling down and reading the whole thing? Not many I guess? Not my wife OR myself did.

Your right Irv. Like I said here, some won't let you finish without their junk installing. Third one I tried had various other software junk it wanted to install with it, you could go to advanced and not install some of it but, some you had to install or the game won't install.
