OK, I know we have a few Norton non-fans here, but this latest release of its Security Suite has a problem that hits quite a few people. Didn't ship that way it seems but 22.1.0.9 version released a few weeks ago fixed a shutdown problem many were having. It broke Virtual Drives basically. Causing a BSOD when you try to access the drive. Seems mostly Cryptology programs were hit, but we've discovered MS Office as well.
I am a fan of Norton and their programs work well for us. Wife had Norton Internet Security 2014 installed prior. We usually wait until Black Friday (in the US, day after Thanksgiving) where there are good sales and usually Norton products are fairly cheap. Other years we've gotten if for free or $10USD after rebates. This year it was $20USD (Norton is on yearly subscription like many other A/V products). In the past we've held off installing as you lose days if you install it before the old version is about to expire. This year, even though Norton changed the product name, when installed it kept and added the old versions subscription days remain to the new version subscription, nice touch.
A few days after installing it my wife says her computer crashed and she didn't know why and the system rebooted. She shows me what she did, something simple like trying to open her MS Office Starter 2010 Excel. Poof, the BSOD with a PNP_DETECTED_FATAL_ERROR message. This also caused some open programs problems as well as the USB network device being removed on reboot. At least one program lost its settings. Questioning my wife as to what new did she install (she uses Office infrequently) she didn't recall, but I did install Norton a few days before so I started disabling programs and finally Norton and that stopped the problem. Looking at Norton forums HERE didn't show anything and if MS Office were the problem I'd have expected to find some. So I posted and was told it was a Virtual Drive problem that hit the encryption programs probably and it came in on the last update.
So, if you get Norton watch out until a new drop is out.
